1. The shape of the parcel

   Round, square, rectangular or irregular — and whether it is one parcel or several. Shape is what decides between a center pivot, a linear machine and a universal pivot.

2. The area, in decares

   Alan, dekar

   Area sets the span count and the length of the machine. A rough figure is enough to start; a cadastral plan or a pin on the map makes it exact.

3. The water source

   Well, canal, pond or mains — with the flow you can count on and where it enters the field. Flow and pressure size the pump and the sprinklers.

4. The crop and the ground

   What you grow, and whether the ground falls away. Crop height sets the clearance; slope sets the tower drive and the wheel package.
